Scissor Sisters - “Fire With Fire”: reacted very poorly to this as a stand-alone single but it made a lot more sense on the Night Work album. I still think the fire/fi-yah/des-i-yah hook is pretty weak but the whole song is about builds - bringing in the drumbeat, hitting the “just like fireflies” middle eight, and once it’s got to that it turns into a victory lap more or less. So there we are, I underrated this one.

Tom asked people on Twitter to name their favourite pop song of 2010, and he’s now blogging each one with comments. This was my choice, albeit for largely subjective personal reasons which need not concern anybody else! Granted, I loathed it on the first two or three listens, in large part due to that tired old fi-yah/des-i-yah rhyme, but part of its genius is the way that it wrings arresting/affecting new meaning from what the Scissors must surely know is the corniest rhyme in the book. In fact, I can’t recall the last time that I made the journey from loathing a song so deeply, to adoring it so unreservedly. I suppose it’s the band’s Stadium Rock Moment in some ways, but they wear it well, and I am almost beside myself with anticpation at seeing them perform it next week. There may be tears. In fact, there almost certainly WILL be tears!
